TiVo Decode Manager

Last night I had that mac dude over at my house ( http://www.thatmacdude.com ) after a couple drinks we started talking about the Tivo DRM being cracked last week and that someone will write a GUI for it (Its all command line now) we he grabbed my laptop and with a few keystrokes downloaded and installed “TiVo Decode Manager” threw my Media Access Key into it, was then able to browse both of my Tivos and with one click of the mouse it was downloading and converting it to an mpg2 file, a 30 minute show in about 30 minutes… fricken sweet…

For a program that is less than a week old it sure is sweet, it finally gives me a chance to load tv shows on my laptop (powerbook 17″) I’m pretty sure that Tivo will shut this down very soon, so I’ll enjoy it while it lasts.

One big problem with the software at this point is it created a file on the desktop that by default opened in Quicktime and it wouldn’t play it without buying a third party mpeg2 CODEC, so we fired it in VLC and it played like a champ… I thought sweet.. so I tried transfering it to a Windows machine and firing it up on Windows Media Player; No Joy.. didn’t play with downloading a CODEC for that too. Soooo This is a really cool advancment in regards to Tivo and Apple, I understand its a new software and I hope it gets more developed as time goes on..

Update:

in the preferences of the tivo decode manager there is a check box that sticks your shows right into iTunes, I assume you can transfer these shows to and video capable iPod including iPhones. It sure makes it simple to transfer your favorite show right from your Tivo to your mac. let us know your luck with transfering tivo shows to the iPhone.
